I ran across a blog post today from a relatively new blogger, Brian McHenry (or at least the blog he is currently authoring is new). Anyhow, Brian had some very insightful observations on the Lake of Fire verses in Revelation. I thought that I’d pass along his post: The Pond of Fire

Hi Jed,
I know that the Holy Spirit’s fire is already at work on God’s children. We are daily under that crucible for this world with all of it’s trails is fuel for our purification.
The Lord’s desire is that all men would be saved. He is after their hearts and that is why he uses our lives as an example of what He can do. But some reject it and harden their hearts. We and the Lord don’t wish this but they have made their choice.
I am sure that everyone in Hell is remorseful and repentful. Look at Jesus’s story about the Rich man and Lazerus. He did have his life to make his choice but chose the temporary world instead. Lazerus had nothing on Earth but put His hope into Eternity.
All I know is that God makes the rules and knows how to eradicate sin and its effects. These are His desires and wishes. We are either obedient to Him or not.

Gary,
I understand where you are coming from on this. The only issue I would take is not on the notion of whether or not there is a hell – certainly there is and certainly we want to avoid it. The question is whether it is a place of everlasting conscious torment. I don’t think that it is. This isn’t based on what I believe is wishful thinking, but based on what I think the Bible actually teaches. You can check out some of the resources I have listed in Christian Universalism, and if you ever want, I’d love to discuss this with you over a cup of coffee brother.
