  1. Jedidiah – your video was provocative and disturbing. I need (often) to be disturbed – lest I settle on my theological ‘lees’…
    I want to inquire about what is undoubtedly the most controversial statements you made with regard to the LGBTQ community. For now I just want to ask if I should wait to engage you on this seeing you seemed to promise a further unpackaging of what you meant?

    I have specific observations (and, admittedly, some “push back”) – but I think I may be premature to raise them before having heard you out more fully on this. You proclaim very boldly that if we do not embrace the position you put forward then we are without question out of step with what the God who IS Love is doing in our day.

    With complete sincerity – I do not want to be one of those “left behind”! But, assuming I understand what you are proposing (and I may well not!) – I (at least at this point) cannot in good conscience (fully) agree with you. Having said that I DO agree we (the Church at large – the Body of Christ) MUST re-think and re-act differently than we do toward individuals who identify as LGBTQ. I take it that this is the sort of thing that Preston Sprinkle is engaged in. And yet he still seems to think that conscience will not allow him to say that these “lifestyles” are simply acceptable alternative ways of living in (and out of) God’s love.

  2. Wayne, thanks so much for responding. Some of this would probably be impossible to get into with sufficient depth outside of a conversation – so, if you’re open to having one, let me know and we can figure out a way to make that happen.

    The one thing I will say, is that the tendency in Christian orthodoxy is to improperly ontologize sex, and in doing so, to valorize heteronormativity as the ontologically correct stance on the issue. My contention is that this line of thinking is one that God is calling us to set aside, into something that is both transcendental and cruciform in its inner logic. Obviously, in this, there are details and distinctions that need to be drawn, because I am not advocating a kind of sexual anarchism that some might think I am, rather I am saying that there is something that is going on in the diversification of human sexuality that is indicative of a much deeper reconciling work that God is accomplishing in our time.

    If you’re open to it, maybe we can set up a time to talk about this in a way where I am sensitive to your specific concerns and that I make sure I am actually addressing them in a way that creates at least a ground for understanding even if at the end of the day we don’t come into full agreement.
